WRITING + WEB & LOGO DESIGN

Pete Guyre’s design-build business grew gradually, then suddenly. Yes, an embarrassment of riches— and results in having no time to develop a website contact page, let alone a brand.

Viewers Like You began by building a logo and logomark… and were also asked to name the studio. The brief for all was clear, he wanted something Industrial, but mid-century modern industrial, not 1980s music kind.

Naming was an unusually fluid process, in fact, it was agreed to via text as we were casually brainstorming possibilities. PeterWerks was inspired by the German word for a room or building, especially in a factory, where construction and repairs are carried out: Werkstatt. For the logo and mark, we built upon the German name and looked to the Bauhaus for inspiration. Known for merging art, society, and technology, The Bauhaus produced artists & designers that unify the principles of mass production with individual artistic vision and combine aesthetics with everyday function. Cesium by Hoefler & Co was an obvious choice being a (brutalist) inline slab serif, that has an unusual (nimble) energy.

Like everything in this project, the website also flowed easily. Built as a brochure, the site is designed to not need much attention, and attract good client fits. To build a coterie of clients that are well-aligned we limited the portfolio to 4-6 projects annually. Making it not only easy to maintain, but tight. As well as not having much depth to the site. Nothing is more than two clicks away.

Finally, a series of “mood boards” replace the ubiquitous blog. Blogs serve to keep visitors current, as well as act to shine a light on a business’s P.O.V. Maintaining a blog, however, is a full-time job. Instead, the mood boards use locations around the globe to show PeterWorks’s outlook and vibe. From Osaka to Los Feliz. These visual playscapes communicate in a visceral way, while freeing up the burden of continually feeding a blog.
